The short answer
AEO (answer engine optimization) is about being the answer a tool gives. GEO (generative engine optimization) is about being cited in answers written by generative AI. For a business in 2026 the two describe nearly the same work. AEO is the wider, older term and still includes featured snippets and voice search. GEO is the narrower one. If an agency treats them as two separate products, ask what changes between them.
AEO vs GEO, side by side
| AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Stands for | Answer engine optimization | Generative engine optimization |
| Goal | Be the answer | Be used and cited in an AI-written answer |
| Older meaning | Featured snippets and voice assistants | None: the term dates from 2023 |
| Where it applies today | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, snippets, voice | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, AI Overviews |
| Core tactics | Direct answers, clear structure, accurate facts, third-party mentions | The same |
| Measured by | Share of answers, position named, citations | The same |
Where each term came from
AEO came first, from the years when “the answer” meant a featured snippet or something a voice assistant read aloud. The goal was to give one clear response that a machine could lift.
GEO was named in a 2023 research paper from Princeton and collaborators, which tested how page changes affect visibility in generative answers. It found that adding statistics, quotations and cited sources could raise visibility by up to 40%.
When ChatGPT and Perplexity went mainstream, the two terms landed on the same job. Which one people use now says more about who’s talking than about the work.
Where the difference still matters
- Featured snippets and voice. These are AEO, not GEO. A single extracted answer rewards a tight 40-to-60-word response.
- Long answers that compare options. ChatGPT and Perplexity write these from several sources. Being mentioned on other sites matters more here than the wording of your own page.
- Engines with no live search. When a model answers from memory, only long-term brand presence helps. Page edits show up when the tool searches the web.
- Agency proposals. The label doesn’t tell you what’s included. Ask for a list of what ships each month.
What the same work looks like in practice
Whichever word you use, the weekly list is the same:
- List the questions buyers ask AI tools about your category.
- Run them across engines and record who’s named and which sites are cited.
- Fix crawler access and wrong facts.
- Put a direct answer on the page that should win each question.
- Earn mentions on the sites those answers already cite.
- Run the questions again and repeat.
Step five is the one most teams underrate, and it’s also why one engine’s results don’t predict another’s. In the AEO Index, we compared the sites ChatGPT and Perplexity cited for 15 software questions. They cited 375 sites between them, counting each question separately, and only 22 were cited by both on the same question. So the work has to cover more than one engine, whatever you call it.
What about AI SEO and LLMO?
AI SEO usually means the same work, sold by an SEO firm, or using AI tools to do SEO, so check which one someone means. LLMO (large language model optimization) is another name for GEO. AI search optimization is the plain-English version of all of them.
Which should you do?
Don’t pick. Start by checking that AI crawlers can read your site with our free AEO audit, then work through the list above. If you’d rather hand it over, we’re an AEO agency and GEO agency at the same time, because it’s one job.
